Five tips for when you’re moving cross country

Planning your move right can save you money and lead to putting less stress on yourself

Saving a bit of money when you make a cross-country move isn’t just a fantastic idea, it is also very possible and quite realistic. Relocating, especially when you are moving to another province or state, can cost you quite a bit – moving a three-bedroom home can be as much as $10,000 when you look at the move itself (this is calculated by the pound for interprovincial/interstate moves), packing and the insurance you need.

Why would you pay that much money when you can easily get that figure down and still have a high-quality move? Here is a look at some of the ways that you can save on your cross country or interstate move.

DIY or professional?

Moving across the country while saving money doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to do it all by your moving cross countrylonesome. Hiring people who are not professionals, like teenagers or students, can lead to unnecessary risk because they might not have the ability to do the work required with the quality that you need. Having items or boxes broken is one of the last things that anyone needs when moving day arrives. Additionally, when you add up all of the costs that you will incur by trying to do things by yourself, the total price might even be more than what it would be if you had hired one of the North American moving companies. Everything will hinge on where you are relocating to. Compare trying to do it yourself to having professionals do it and then make an informed decision.

Once you have decided

Once you have made the decision that hiring professionals will actually save you money, you need to book them as soon as possible. Aside from saving money, this is a good tip for a stress-free move. If you wait until the last minute, your chosen company might not have any availability. You need to call them as soon as you know the date of your move so that you know you will have a better chance of booking them.

Quality packing materials

One of the best tips for moving cross country is to get packing materials that are high quality. You need to take care when you are choosing your boxes. Sometimes, boxes that you get second hand are not as strong as they might seem and might not be capable of carrying the weight that will go into them. If those boxes break during the move across the country, you will lose time and spend more money to go out and get new boxes to pack everything again. When it comes to your packing supplies, this can definitely be a case of going the cheap route only to find that it is the more expensive route.

Valuables

If you have valuables that you will be worried about during the move, you might consider packing and shipping them or moving them yourself. At the same time, professional movers make this their specialty and this is just one of the many reasons that you can count on them. Professional cross-country movers will pack all of your items well and be careful with everything during the move.

Pro Tip for our American readers – If you have a lot of traditional books, consider packing them and sending them via the US Postal Service as Media Mail. This is the cheapest way to send anything through the mail and it will save you quite a bit since books can weigh quite a bit and professionals can charge by the pound.

Timing

Trying to get the price down for your move begins with choosing a good time to move. Months like August and September might seem to be ideal, but it can be more expensive to move then because that is peak moving season. Other times to avoid are at the end or beginning of any month, on the weekends, during the holidays and throughout the whole of summer. You won’t always be flexible when it comes time to move, but if you are, it can save you quite a bit.

When it comes to planning your move right, saving money can also mean putting less stress on yourself, and who needs that?
